Galador: The Prince and the Coward

One of the most ambitious Polish adventure games of the 1990s, developed by Metropolis Software, the studio founded by Adrian Chmielarz and Grzegorz Miechowski. The story was written by Jacek Piekara, a renowned Polish author whose contribution gave the game a distinctive literary depth. Released in 1998 for PC, Galador: The Prince and the Coward reflected the growing sophistication of Polish game design and its focus on storytelling, intricate puzzles, and richly crafted worlds.
The game tells the story of a young man whose soul, after making a pact with the devil, becomes trapped in the body of Prince Galador. Seeking to reclaim his true identity, the protagonist embarks on a journey through a world filled with magic, irony, and unexpected moral choices. Blending humor and fantasy, the narrative exemplified the Polish approach to adventure game design, where plot, atmosphere, and dialogue seamlessly intertwine to create emotional depth.
Galador: The Prince and the Coward featured 38 locations, nearly 40 characters, and a classic point-and-click interface with a verb menu. Its hand-painted backgrounds, fluid animations, and expressive writing built a rich and immersive world that combined the European adventure tradition with a distinctly Polish storytelling sensibility.
In 2021, the game was re-released on GOG.com, reaffirming its place in the history of Polish narrative games and celebrating the creativity of the developers who helped lay the foundations of Poland’s modern game industry.
