Carrion

Phobia Game Studio, 2020

Developed by the Polish independent studio Phobia Game Studio and published by Devolver Digital, Carrion is a unique reverse horror game in which the player does not take on the role of a hero but instead controls a monster. The game subverts traditional horror conventions, offering an entirely new experience of immersion and narrative within the genre.

Players control an amorphous, grotesque creature escaping from laboratories, terrorizing scientists, and exploring its environment. The gameplay allows full freedom of movement and level exploration, while the monster’s abilities — such as climbing walls, tearing through obstacles, and consuming enemies — introduce dynamic and strategic gameplay.

Carrion stands out for its dark, unsettling atmosphere, striking visual design, and carefully crafted audio, which amplify the sense of tension and horror. The game offers non-linear exploration, allowing players to decide the order of their actions and the approach to eliminating enemies, enhancing both immersion and player agency.

The game received international recognition and accolades, including the BAFTA Award for Debut Game in 2021. Critics praised Carrion for its original approach to the genre, innovative mechanics, and immersive atmosphere, distinguishing it from traditional horror games.

By inverting the player’s role, combining a dark artistic style with inventive gameplay, Carrion demonstrates that a Polish studio can create original, engaging, and artistically expressive experiences that redefine expectations for horror games.
