Hellish Quart
Developed by the independent Polish studio Kubold, Hellish Quart is a realistic sword-fighting game, set in seventeenth-century Poland, that redefines the concept of melee combat in video games.
Players take on the role of warriors of the era, including Polish hussars, Cossacks, Tatar horsemen, and French musketeers, engaging in duels where technique, timing, and strategy are crucial. The combat system is based on physics that simulate weapon collisions, active ragdoll animation, and motion-captured movements, giving each fight a sense of authenticity and depth.
The game’s mechanics allow full freedom of movement and a personalized fighting style. Four buttons correspond to different attack angles, while each weapon varies in speed, reach, and weight. Defense is never absolute, as a stronger opponent can break through the guard or exploit a longer weapon’s reach. The realism is further enhanced by historical settings and detailed character models created using 3D scans of authentic period costumes.

Hellish Quart stands out for its unique atmosphere, historical accuracy, and technological innovation. Set in the 17th-century Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, with realistic weapon physics and motion, and with optional VR support, the game delivers an experience distinct from traditional fighting games.
Critics and players have praised the game for its original approach to the genre, authentic mechanics, and evocative visual presentation, distinguishing it from conventional melee combat titles.
By combining technical skill, historical vision, and artistic boldness, Hellish Quart demonstrates that a Polish studio can create productions that redefine a genre and deliver experiences on par with the world’s top titles.
