A.D. 2044

L. K. Avalon, 1991

A Polish adventure game created by Roland Pantoła and published by LK Avalon for the Atari 8-bit platform. The game reflects the strong interest among Polish developers in complex storytelling and intricate logic puzzles. A.D. 2044 blends elements of science fiction, satire, and social commentary, illustrating how naturally Polish creators embraced ambitious, narrative-driven forms of game design.

The story was inspired by the Polish science-fiction comedy “Sexmission”, directed by Juliusz Machulski - a cult film from the 1980s. Set in the year 2044, the game envisions a post-nuclear world where men have nearly gone extinct and women have taken control of civilization. The protagonist, one of the few surviving men, awakens from hibernation in a mechanized society of the future and sets out to restore balance. Along the way, he solves challenging puzzles and uncovers the secrets of this new order, where humor and irony intertwine with reflections on power, identity, and the human condition.

The game’s popularity led to a new edition. In 1996, A.D. 2044 was re-released for PC/Windows with prerendered 3D graphics, full voice acting, and cinematic cutscenes. Distributed on two CD-ROMs, it became one of the early Polish titles to usher in the multimedia era of gaming.
